How Much Fat Does Coolsculpting Remove?

Expect a 20 to 25% reduction per area treated and this has been consistent with the patients I have treated. Some patients wil do an area twice to get more of a reduction.

Coolsculpting is not indicated for cellulite but some patients seem to think that the cellulite did improve. (Anh Lee, MD, El Paso Plastic Surgeon)

How much fat loss with CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting (CS) requires a proper fit of the suction applicator in order to optimally rid the subcutaneous fat. If you have a lot of skin with little fat or tightness of skin and fat where the applicator cannot draw the tissue bulge into it, CS will not help you.

CS is tried and true but very limited in the amount of fat reduction per session.

When optimally fit, I have estimated each small applicator session will resorb 100-200 grams of fat or up-to-20% of the fat bulge pulled into the applicator.

There is also a flat applicator which will resorb about half as much per session.

When used serially, a Treatment to Transformation improvement can yield liposuction-like results. Areas of fat loss / gain are genetically determined with lifestyle (diet and exercise).

CoolSculpted areas appear to lose fat in those areas applied first rather than later and in many cases has encouraged and motivated my patients to make further lifestyle changes to lose more weight.

CS does not state it will shrink skin but experience finds that skin reduction occurs in areas like the back rolls and lower tummy.

I would not anticipate this procedure to improve cellulite or dimpling but it has improved skin/fat irregularity particularly when used after prior liposuction. Please consult with a Certified Cool Sculpting Specialist or if this is not the right fit for your needs, seek evaluation from a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. (Dean P. Kane, MD, FACS, Baltimore Plastic Surgeon)

CoolSculpting Fat Reduction

The amount of fat removed by CoolSculpting can not be precisely controlled. Each treatment session yields a 20-25% reduction in fat of the treated area (with the exception of the flat, CoolSmooth, applicator which is closer to 12%).

A second treatment can be performed which will result in an additional 20-25% reduction. It is important to make sure the proper applicators are chosen and appropriately placed to target your areas of concern. CoolSculpting has very little effect on cellulite. I would suggest a consultation with an experienced provider who can further help you determine if CoolSculpting will best meet your needs. (Kent V. Hasen, MD, Naples Plastic Surgeon)

The amount of fat loss that can be expected is pretty consistent with this procedure. We generally find that patients get optimal results with two treatment sessions per area. On average we see between 20-25% reduction in the fat layer in the treated area per session.

CoolSculpting was not designed to address cellulite and my personal opinion is that we have yet to see a technology that gets great long lasting results in the cellulite space. I am hopeful about some of the preliminary data that I am seeing about Cellfina but that is not yet readily available here in the United States. (Paul Vitenas, Jr., MD, Houston Plastic Surgeon)

Each time Coolscultping is performed on an area, 20-25% is removed over 2-3 months.

We have been doing it so much that we can tell you how much fat you can expect to lose and how many treatments you can expect to need to get your best result. (Sheila S. Nazarian, MD, Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon)

Coolsculpting Versus Liposuction and Fat Removed

Coolsculpting fat removal is random. There is typically a 15-20% improvement in the area but only to the localized area of fat that is pulled in to the applicator.

It works, but is not as easy to contour or shape or get the size reduction you can from liposuction.

You do not have to get liposuction while asleep, tumescent type liposuction is very safe and the recovery is minimal. (Jason Emer, MD, Los Angeles Dermatologic Surgeon)

No procedure predictably can reduce cellulite

Coolsculpting works and its efficacy can be adjusted with cooling level, suction level, and time between treatments. It works. At our office we do adjust these items to roughly double the efficacy. (Peter J. Capizzi, MD, Charlotte Plastic Surgeon)

CoolSculpting is used to reduce unwanted fat to specific areas. Your best option is to schedule a consultation with a medical professional to discuss your problem area. This way you will obtain a better understanding of what CoolSculpting will do for you. (Martin Jugenburg, MD, Toronto Plastic Surgeon)

Can you control how much fat generally is removed by CoolSculpting?

You cannot control how much fat you lose with CoolSculpting, but typical results would be about 20% per treatment area per session. For best results, most patients require more than one treatment session, so losing too much fat is not typically a concern.

There are different applicators with CoolSculpting, and the one for thighs is different than the one for the abdomen and flanks. CoolSculpting does not reduce cellulite and dimpling.

For long-lasting results for cellulite I would recommend Cellulaze or Celafina, other treatments for cellulite require ongoing treatment and do not deal with underlying cause of the dimpling. (Steven L. Ringler, MD, FACS, Grand Rapids Plastic Surgeon)

Coolsculpting is great for those target areas, however, it will probably not get rid of cellulite and dimpling in most cases. It destroys about 20% of the fat cells, in reference to not wanting to lose too much fat in your thighs. (Gregory Turowski, MD, PhD, FACS, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)
