If your skin was tanned, the chances of this happening is increased. However, once in a while, I have encountered this unfortunate complication.

See your practitioner as soon as possible and the skin needs to be monitored closely. If the skin starts to scab, there is a chance of developing Hypopigmentation (low colour skin) or Hyperpigmentation (darker skin). You shouldn’t have any more treatment to the affected area till all the symptoms have subsided and the skin has returned to normal.
