Does Coolsculpting Really Work On Chin?
Where can one use CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting has an attachment that is appropriate for the area under the chin. It is not approved for use on the face. It is FDA approved and has applications throughout the body, (arms, abdomen, legs, etc.).
Best to see a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to evaluate what your options, (liposuction, abdominoplasty, face/necklift), might be. (Jeffrey J. Roth, MD, FACS, Las Vegas Plastic Surgeon)
Double Chin Treatments
For submetal fullness, commonly and affectionately referred to as the ‘double chin,’ there are actually three treatment options currently available: Liposuction, CoolSculpting and Kybella.
Your candidacy for any of these treatments will depend upon your skin tone and elasticity, the presence or absence of excess skin, amount of fat present, and your medical profile.
Liposuction tends to be less popular today because of the effectiveness and ease of CoolSculpting and Kybella as nonsurgical alternatives but is still an option that can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending upon your PS preference.
CoolSculpting uses FDA approved cooling technology to freeze and kill the fat cells in the target treatment area using applicators on the skin. As a non-invasive method for fat reduction, patients can expect up to a 25% reduction of fat cells in the areas treated after each treatment but can require more than one treatment spaced at least 4 weeks apart.
The draw for many patients is that this can be done on a break from work or school and required absolutely no downtime. Kybella is a deoxycholic acid injection that is also FDA approved for fat removal/destruction of the double chin.
As an injectable treatment it requires no anesthetic, although many practices will offer topical numbing cream of the area to take the edge and sting of the injection off. I find that many of my patients like this treatment to get rid of the double chin because the injury caused by the deoxycholic acid’s destruction of the fat cells can also help to stimulate collagen and promotes some skin retraction in the area treated.
Kybella will often require 2 (sometimes 3) treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart and patients should expect some swelling and potential bruising that can last a couple of days. To learn more about the various treatment options available to you, I would encourage you to schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon. (Christine Blaine, MD, Long Island Plastic Surgeon)
Coolsculpting is not for neck or chin
Coolsculpting is FDA approved for love handles and abdomen not chin or neck and thus we do not use it there and there would be significant risks if done in this area. We have extensive experience with and have had Coolsculpting for over three years and see great results in properly selected individuals, location and fat texture are key variables. (Steven Hacker, MD, West Palm Beach Dermatologic Surgeon)
Can Cool Sculpting be performed on the chin or upper back?
I have treated many backs with Cool Sculpting and had great success! It’s important you be evaluated by a physician competent with this procedure to see if you are a good candidate. Back skin tends to be very elastic which can lead to a good result as the skin retracts.
The fatty roll needs to be completely sucked into the applicator to be successful. Treating the back is currently off label. There is currently not an applicator for the neck. (Jennifer Harrington, MD, Minneapolis Plastic Surgeon)
Coolsculpting or liposuction for double chin
If the issue is fatty tissue, cool mini or liposuction will be effective. You have left out another excellent treatment for neck fat which is Kybella injections. It’s fine to start with removing the fat non surgically with cool mini or kybella, then see how the skin tightens up.
We often combine cool mini and kybella. If you want just one modality to treat it, kybella is the most versatile and you can inject it exactly where you need it. (Susan Buenaventura, MD, FACS, Alexandria Plastic Surgeon)
Combining CoolSculpting & Kybella
While it is probably safe to follow CoolSculpting with Kybella, the more important question is making sure that you have the right diagnosis. Sometimes submandibular glands and neck muscles can masquerade as residual fat. In this case, Kybella is unlikely to help and may actually be harmful.
This is one of the challenges and limitations of non-surgical treatments…they are modestly effective, but often leave patients dissapointed or spending more out of pocket than a more definitive procedure would have. To be certain, seek a second opinion from an independent physician prior to undergoing another treatment. (Robert F. Centeno, MD, FACS, Columbus Plastic Surgeon)
Can you mix CoolSculpting and Kybella treatments under the chin?
Using CoolSculpting and Kybella under the chin has been done and results have been quite nice.
Sounds as though most of the “debulking” has been done with CoolSculpting and now using Kybella to fine tune or “clean up” is a very reasonable approach.
The only thing I would not do is CoolSculpting and Kybella at the same time. Which ever you are doing you should wait the recommended time interval between treatments to either do an additional treatment of the same or switch to the other for best results. (Paul Pietro, MD, Greenville Physician)
As long as the area being ‘touched up’ is truly fat and not loose skin. Although they work differently, both Coolsculpting and Kybella are designed to safely eliminate fat cells from the body, and can be combined for optimal results.
While they are both indicated for treating the neck area, their indicated treatment zones differ. Coolsculpt can be safely used to treat the lateral and medial aspects of the neck while Kybella is indicated only medially (as lateral placement can result in nerve damage).
On the contrary, Kybella can be used to fine tune smaller areas that Coolsculpting cannot. Often times, I will combine Coolsculpt and Kybella in patients who require multiple treatment areas on the anterior and lateral aspects of the neck for best results. (Ryan Kirkland, MD, Dublin Dermatologic Surgeon)
Alternating between Kybella and CoolMini for best results
You can definitely alternate or switch between these two treatments to get optimal results. Probably not the type of treatments that you would want to combine in one visit but alternating between these treatments is no problem and will likely yield great results. (Payman Kosari, MD, FAAD, Charlotte Dermatologic Surgeon)
Combining Coolsculpting and Belkyra (Kybella) for best results
Treating the double chin with Kybella (Belkyra in Canada) at least 8 – 12 weeks after Coolsculpting will give you the best results. It is great for people with residual submental fat after Coolsculpting treatments. (Alain Michon, MD, Ottawa Physician)
This is a reasonable approach – to use Kybella for the “clean-up” areas remaining after Coolsculpting. Alternatively, a little liposuction under local anesthesia could be performed. (Thomas Fiala, MD, Orlando Plastic Surgeon)
Can CoolSculpting be used under chin and sides of face?
At this point in time, CoolSculpting cannot be used to treat fat under the chin or on the sides of the face. There are no applicators available that would fit those areas. CoolSculpting is currently used only to treat areas on the body, and not the face.
In the future, it is possible that CoolSculpting may be able to be used under the chin and the face. (Michael I. Echavez, MD, San Francisco Facial Plastic Surgeon)
