Answer Snippet
CoolSculpting Vs. Zerona
completely different techniques
Jun 21, 2015
The two devices have completely different mechanisms of action. Coolsculpting utilizes freezing temparature to reduce the fatty bulges without damaging the skin, and Zerona uses phototherapy/light energy to reduce the fat. I am a big proponant of phototherapy overall, but for fatty bulge reduction, Coolsculpting has much more literature behind it as well as almost 2 million treatment cycles performed to date, with high patient satsifaction.
Since CoolSculpting Freezes Fat to Kill It, Why Not Just Repeatedly Apply Ice Bags?
never that easy
Jun 21, 2015
While your theory makes sense to a point, you have left out an important concern. If ice bags alone are used, the skin could be injured by frostbite as well. You’ve probably seen pictures of frostbite online and the tissue loss is dramatic. In other words, the fat would be reduced, but the overlying skin could also die, resulting in potential scarring at best or the need for reconstructive surgery- skin grafts, flaps, or even amputations, at worst. Coolsculpting solves this…
Does Zeltiq (CoolSculpting) Really Work for Fat Reduction?
not just wishful thinkin!
Jun 21, 2015
A recent review article, which analyzed over 300 hundred articles on cryolipolysis/Coolsculpting, clearly demonstrated the efficacy of this technique. As always, realistic expectations are the key to happiness. If a patient has appropriate fatty anatomy and is an acceptable candidate, Coolsculpting can deliver 20-25% bulge reduction with each cycle, and even more with additional cycles. This is done with no surgical risk or downtime.
How Long Does the Coolsculpting Procedure Last and How Many Treatments Are Needed?
depends on your presentation
Jun 21, 2015
As mentioned by others, each Coolsculpting cycle takes 1 hour. The number of cycle(treatments) depends on several variables- your fatty bulge anatomy, how much fat is present, your expectations. For example, some patients with minimal fat present in the bottom half of the abdomen may need only 1 or 2 cycles, whereas other pts with significantly more fat may need 4-6 cycles initially, and another series of cycles 1-3 months later. Each cycle will reduce the fatty bulge 20-25% on…
I am considering a breast lift. I’m not keen on implants. Do you think a breast lift could improve my
good candidate
Apr 14, 2015
You seem to be a good candidate for a breast lift. Many patients also have implants placed concurrently, which can improve shape further. However, if implants are used, your breasts will be larger, proportional to the size of the implants. This is very desirable for some women, and not desirable for others. This is a personal decision and should be made thoughtfully. The good news is, both methods- mastopexy with or without implants- are good techniques and…
Tummy tuck vs lipo?
lipo wouldn’t work
Apr 14, 2015
I strongly agree with Dr Morea that waiting until you are finished having children is the best timing strategy. Having said that, you would get a very poor result with liposuction alone. Liposuction, which is great in an appropriate candidate, only addresses the superficial fat directly under the skin. If there is extra skin and separation of the rectus muscles(six pack muscles), only tummy tuck addresses all of these problems. This procedure is more costly, has a higher…
I’m looking for a doctor who is not conservative with facelifts. I’m looking for a drastic change
drastic vs natural
Apr 14, 2015
Your request is the opposite of most patients who want to look natural after surgery. I would be very careful with your wording. Do you really want a too tight, fake looking facelift? If a patient requested this, I would have to refuse, as it would reflect poorly on both of us. I’m sure you want to look better, younger, firmer, etc, and this can be obtained with a beautiful, natural result. Conservative does not mean wimpy, and drastic does not mean better in…
How can a surgeon avoid damaging the nerve while shaving the salivary glands during my facelift?
Not part of a typical facelift
Apr 14, 2015
In my opinion, I would be very hesitant to”shave the salivary glands” as part of a facelift. It is a question of risk vs reward. Unless there is compelling reason, a parotid tumor perhaps, it is better not to disrupt the parotid fascia, which can potentially lead to a long list of complications. If you are referring to the submandibular glands, they can be “tucked” rather than excised, although this isnt usually necessary either. I’ve been doing facelifts for 25 years…
I want to firm up my arms. They are getting loose due to age. I don’t want a scar. What are my options
if there is extra skin…
Apr 14, 2015
If there is indeed extra skin, there is no alternative to surgery if you want a happy result, in my opinion. The nonsurgical skin tightening devices have a place, but if the skin is hanging, only surgery will work. I ask my patients- would you rather have loose hanging skin on your arms, or firm upper arms with a scar that usually heals reasonably well, and can be covered with makeup if necessary. Thats it- a trade off of a scar for the hanging skin. The decision is…
Looking for least invasive procedure for mid-face and jowl lift.
You may not like this answer, but…
Apr 13, 2015
You sound like you’re on the fence between surgery and non surgical solutions, and need to simply decide which is for you. Unfortunately, its not that simple, as the two categories accomplish different goals. If you indeed have some skin laxity in your face and neck, and muscle banding in the midline neck, non surgical treatments do not address that effectively. Botox, fillers, energy based devices- lasers, ultrasound, etc are great in the patient that understands what they can…
Am I a Candidate for the Benelli Lift or Cresent Lift?
strongly recommend against surgery
Nov 5, 2011
At age 19, and based on the pictures, i would recommend no surgery at this time. 21 years of experience tell me that the trade-off of scars for a very slight improvement is not worth it in your case. If you heal with anything less than perfect scars, certainly not guaranteed, you will look worse and feel worse about your results than you do now.
Should the Plastic Surgeon Take Pre-op Measurements of Your Chest?
not always necessary
Dec 15, 2010
As a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with over 20 years of experience I do NOT take preop measurements on all Augmentation candidates.  If the case is complicated by certain factors- asymmetry, multiple previous procedures, etc then these measurements are useful.  However, by this time I can "eyeball" a patients frame and, based on her request, choose the best implant for her.  With this technique, my revision rate has been less than 1% over the years and my…
Double Chin and Loose Jawline
You are too young for this type of surgery
Nov 11, 2010
I would not recommend any intervention at this time.  More pics would be helpful- however, even a model holding her face and neck in certain positions will see some folds and depressions.  You are too young for these type of anti aging treatments.  Be very careful – you can end up looking very fake and distorted – think Michael Jackson- by making poor decisions now.
Tummy Tuck Scar Necrosis – Risks and Causes?
you could but unlikely
Oct 23, 2010
It is possible to have a complication with any procedure with any surgeon at any time.  By minimizing your risk factors you are decreasing your risks.  I perform my abdominoplasties, including conservative lipo, in the hospital only with an overnight stay.  This way I can make sure my patients ambulate the day of surgery, breathe correctly, have good pain control, use compression garments and so on.  In 20 years , I have never had any of my flaps necrose although it…
What is the Difference Between Liposculture, Body Sculpturing, and Lipo?
Liposculture, Body Sculpturing, and Lipo are the same
Oct 23, 2010
These are just clever marketing techniques for the same procedure. There are variations in technique that you should be aware of however- laser vs suction, general vs epidural vs"local", etc. Do your homework and good luck!
