Does Coolsculpting Cause Swelling?

Swelling after Coolsculpting

Swelling after Coolsculpting can be normal for some patients. It is the body’s own way of recovering, or tolerating a procedure. It normally goes away with post treatment compression garments, after a few days.

If it lasts longer than a week or two, I would suggest calling the treating facility for a follow up. Anytime you have swelling anywhere in the body it is understandable the weight will fluctuate up some. (Jennifer Cova, DO, Dayton Physician)

Swelling a Common CoolSculpting Side Effect

Please don’t worry. It is common to have swelling after CoolSculpting treatment. This is part of your body’s reaction to inflammation and healing. This can last up to 2 weeks. Also, some patients develop a bruise at the treatment site.

If you have any other concerns please contact your treating physician. (Hardik Soni, MD (not currently practicing), Summit Emergency Medicine Physician)

Swelling is Common After CoolSculpting

Anytime you have a procedure done that causes injury to tissues of the body, you will have swelling. It is a normal process of healing. When you have tissue injury, the local blood vessels dilate to deliver healing factors and white blood cells.

This process leads to accumulation of fluids. As a result, you will experience edema, also know as, fluid accumulation. Typically, that goes away after a few days. It may take up to a week for it to go away completely.

If the swelling lasts beyond that, please follow up with your CoolSculpting provider. (Garry K. Kim, MD, Pasadena Internist)

Temporary Blanching (whitening Of The Skin) Or Redness

Swelling is a very common side effect. It happens virtually in every patient. Also the more applicators that you do, the more tenderness and swelling you could develop. I suggest wearing spanx to provide some extra support.

The swelling will gradually dissipate over the next week or two. (William Kwan, MD, FAAD, San Francisco Dermatologist)

Is Swelling Normal After CoolSculpting?

Yes, some swelling is normal for some patients after an abdominal treatment of CoolSculpting. Patients may feel bloated for 1-3 weeks. You should start seeing an improvement in six to eight week. (Daniel Taheri, MD, Los Angeles Dermatologic Surgeon)

Swelling after coolsculpting

The original coolsculpting applicators almost always cause swelling. The increased weight is related to the fluid of that swelling. Don’t worry, it lasts one to two weeks and then is gone. By one month you start to see the slimming effects of the treatment and you see the final results at 3 months.

We still use the original applicators when needed, but try to use the newer faster cooladvantage applicators when we can. Those produce less suction and minimal if any post-treatment swelling. Note that both types of applicators work.

The choice depends on their availability and your anatomy. (Heidi A. Waldorf, MD, New York Dermatologist)

CoolSculpting Involves No Needles, Surgery, Or Downtime

Coolsculpting is an amazing procedure especially for the abdominal area. Because the area is “frozen”, some patients due experience a degree of swelling or discomfort in the abdominal area. This swelling should resolve in about a week.

If you are concerned or very uncomfortable you should return to your treating physician for examination. (Michele S. Green, MD, New York Dermatologist)

Swelling is a completely normal reaction after CoolSculpting. It should only around 7 days. Other side effects may be itching and numbness that may last a couple of weeks. (Brian C. Reuben, MD, Salt Lake City Plastic Surgeon)

Abdominal swelling after CoolSculpting

Belly swelling can happen after CoolSculpting. Although this is a non surgical procedure, freezing and killing fat does initiate an inflammatory cascade which eventually breaks down the fat. The suction also can create some swelling.

This will not create downtime. A little bruising can also occur. This will gradually disappear over the course of the next few weeks and by 4 to 6 weeks you will begin to notice a slimmer waistline. (Ran Y. Rubinstein, MD, Manhattan Facial Plastic Surgeon)

Swelling Following CoolSculpting Can Last 2-3 Weeks

It’s not unusual for patients who undergo coolsculpting to have swelling immediately after the procedure. This swelling typically lasts for 2-3 weeks and can easily explain your weight gain following the procedure. In addition to swelling, patients often complain of numbness, tingling sensations, dull achy pains, bruising, cramping and tenderness.

These symptoms also rapidly resolve within 2-3 weeks. Occasionally, resolution of these symptoms can be accelerated by massage and exercise.

If you have anxiety about these symptoms, don’t be afraid to discuss them with your surgeon.

Your surgeon should be able to reassure you and make this a more comfortable experience. (Richard J. Bruneteau, MD, Omaha Plastic Surgeon)
